Vision/Mission/Purpose

Through the partnership of Northeast Lakeview College, San Antonio College, Texas State University, and the University of the Incarnate Word, La Cena , Spanish for “the supper or dinner” aims to increase the number of underrepresented students who (1) declare Nutrition as a major; (2) are retained as Nutrition majors; (3) transfer to UIW or TxState to complete their BS in Nutrition; and (4) are retained as transfer Nutrition majors at UIW and TxState.

Specific Objectives

By 2011, La Cena will increase the number of students who (1) declare Nutrition as a major to 34; (2) are retained as Nutrition majors at the college level to 64.5%; (3) transfer to the University of the Incarnate Word or Texas State University to complete their degree to 28; and (4) are retained as Nutrition majors at the university to 78% at University of the Incarnate Word, and 89% at Texas State University.

Initiatives / Activities

La Cena’s initiatives and activities include financial assistance (scholarships), academic advising, a learning community environment in which students receive support services (mentors), participation in professional conferences, monthly Nutrition Lecture Series presentations, field trips to Texas State University, the University of the Incarnate Word, and the Texas USDA Children’s Nutrition Research Center.
